Our Cruise and Christmas

Well we're finally back from our cruise. We sailed on the Victory this time. It was a ship full of excitement, fun, and my favorite color, green! We went swam with turtles in Barbados. We walked through a rainforest and saw the emerald pool in Dominica. Our ship also went to St.Kitts,St. Lucia, and St. Thomas. If there were any places that I forgot than my dad should cover them for me. We did many other things too and we bought a lot of you christmas presents. On christmas day Santa somehow got onto the boat and gave me a ds game called Club Penguin Elite Penguin Force. I love that game! I loved the cruise and I wish I was still on it. But I would also miss my family and my puppies if I had stayed on the ship. On the 2nd to last day of our cruise (we were in St.Kitts on that day) I took a video of our suite and of our boat leaving St. Kitts. After I find out how to post the video then I'll make another post so you guys can watch both posts.

Observations from the cruise so far - Dec. 25

Merry Xmas, everybody. We miss you, and hope Santa was good to all of you. Here are some observations I've collected over the past few days:

Fun and interesting anecdotes/observations from our trip so far:
- This trip is an amazing pallet of languages, from French to Spanish to Russian and German spoken by people of every hue and color. And these are just the passengers, not the crew.

- Our ship, Carnival Victory, has a mermaid/merman theme throughout the boat. The Greek god, Triton, guards the entrance to the foyer (though I’d figure he’d guard the entrance to the casino instead). The art in between rooms and on the carpet is very subdued on the Victory compared to other ships we’ve been on; for instance, one ship, the Glory, I believe, had scenes from classic art paintings and sculptures. Each floor had its own color – green, red, pink, yellow, blue, etc. and the silhouette of those classic art scenes were in those colors. So, you might have a red Venus de Milo on the Upper Deck and a purple Venus on the Empress deck. On the Victory, the only art on the walls are drawings of older Carnival ships, including a couple we’ve been on like the Fascination and Ecstasy. However, in the Victory’s dining rooms, it is a little odd to dine next to a bronze, full-sized mermaid in all her naked glory.

- There were parts of San Juan, PR like Miramar and Condado that looked a lot like South Beach in Miami with the bright pastel art deco buildings. The only thing that was missing was the huge beach with tons of people on it. There were at least two huge concerts being set up on the Dec. 20 while we walked through the Condado part of San Juan. One was at the Plaza, the other in front of a restaurant that was sponsored by a chocolate company (Ferraro?) that wrap their chocolate truffles up in these gold wrappers. They end up about the size of a golf ball. Well, at the preparation for this concert, there were big gold round wrappers (about the size of an exercise ball) decorating the concert stage. These gold globes were also scattered around the dance and dining area in a variety of shapes (pyramids and totems). Even the waitresses looked like wrapped up chocolates with brown tops and gold skirts. The other concert at the Plaza was just setting up so we didn’t get as good a look at that one.

- IN every island (except Puerto Rico) that we’ve visited so far, they’ve driven on the “wrong side of the road” as Addy had said. I’m not sure about St. Thomas, though. And with that, the driver’s side is on the right hand of the car, not the left. So, in Dominica, when we were driving from Trafalgar Falls to the Emerald Pools, I was sitting up front next to the driver (but in the usual driver’s spot for U.S. cars), and I nodded off. Maybe after an hour of nodding off, a couple of Americans in the back finally noticed me and thought the driver was falling asleep so they panicked (slightly), especially since we were coming down some very hilly roads. Our great tour guide, Rosalind, quickly reminded them, that Martin, our driver, was doing just fine and it was just me who was falling asleep. We all had a good, nervous laugh afterwards, though Karen and Addy know that I can fall asleep just about anywhere.

- Dominica was formerly a British colony, formerly controlled by the French for a while, and “discovered” by the Spanish on Columbus’s 3rd voyage. The Carib Indians were there when he landed in 1503? Rosalind said that the British took control of the island from the French in 1805 after the Battle of Trafalgar – which I’m going to assume was one of the battles in the Napoleonic Wars judging by the time period and the combatants. It finally got its independence from Britain in 1978 and just celebrated its 30th anniversary of freedom earlier this year.

- Dominica is a very small island and it has about 70,000 people on it. Since we were there about 7 years ago, they’ve built a brand new cricket stadium that can hold 12,000 (10K seated and 2K standing), and that colorful stadium was built by the People’s Republic of China. Even its color scheme looked like something right out of the 2008 Olympics. The island claims to be self-sufficient, saying that the only thing they need to import are fruits that they don’t have like apples and other food. They did have lots of bananas and plantains growing along the roads where we travelled – they were encased in blue bags and tied off or marked with different colors to indicate their harvest time. We also saw avocadoes and grapefruit growing off of trees, and Rosalind pulled some lemongrass for us to smell – it cleared up the funky smell of the van with its lemony fresh scent. She said you could also use lemongrass as an insect repellent – just rub the scent on your skin.

- Housing in Dominica is extremely expensive b/c almost everything has to be imported. The average house costs anywhere from $85,000 to $120,000 USD, and it only has a couple of bedrooms, toilet, living room and kitchen. Sounds like those cookie cutter houses from the 1950s made by William Levitt except they weren’t that expensive. All of the new houses need to be built of concrete to withstand hurricane-force winds, and so chopping down some of their beautiful rainforests isn’t really an option.

- As we’re leaving Roseau, Dominica’s main port, and driving up the hilly roads to Trafalgar Falls, what do we see on the side of the road but a decent-sized billboard of Barack Obama’s smiling face. The message is “Change is Coming” and “Vote Barack Obama for President in ‘08”. Rosalind said that “here is your president; he’s never too far away.” I don’t know how I feel about that – creeped out in a Big Brother/1984 way or comforted like I have been so much lately that other nations have embraced him so much as compared to President Bush as seen by the recent shoe throwing incident in Bush’s unannounced trip to Baghdad last week. Karen wondered why the billboard was there in the first place – could it have something to do with a feeling of unity among many people of African descent? Very possible.

- When we stopped at the Dominica National Parks, we had to pay $1 to help with maintenance of the bathrooms. What happened if you were broke and you REALLY had to go?

- In Barbados, we went snorkeling with green hawk bill turtles. Addy’s previous two attempts at snorkeling weren’t so great. Both attempts were in the Pacific and the water was colder and murkier there than it was here. The second time she scraped her knee on some very shallow coral, so I didn’t have very high hopes for this 3rd attempt, but she came through with flying colors. We swam and snorkeled for at least 15-20 minutes and saw at least one turtle. I saw another turtle come to the surface before we jumped in but was too slow on the camera. She didn’t complain about the cold once she got in the water or her mask. We got some pictures of fish and hope to publish them as soon as we get them processed. Also, man-o-man, did we all get a sunburn. I think the day in Barbados was the best weather so far, but that’s purely a relative term. It rained in St. Lucia today on Xmas day; go North 30 degrees latitude, and you’ve got yourself a white Christmas.

- My attempt at buying some premium tequila for Jim Snider came up $8 short in Barbados. I thought I had enough time to get back on the ship, change, get the money and go back, but we ran out of time. So, I secured a similar bottle on the ship.

- In St. Lucia, all the downtown shops were closed for Xmas so we stayed close to the duty free shops on the pier. We almost took a taxi ride around the island instead at the cost of $35 USD (down from $60) put the guy we negotiated with seemed kind of slimy and I didn’t get a good vibe from him (especially since there was a sign that said –“Use only licensed taxis” – right outside the exit of the duty free shops). He also wanted us to meet him about 50 yards beyond the shops, and that set alarm bells off in my head. So, when Karen said she didn’t want to take that long of a ride, I didn’t protest. Spidey-sense saves the day.

Towel Animals

Addy took pictures of our newest animal friends in our stateroom: a monkey, a dog/pig (we can’t agree on what it is), and our newest addition, an elephant. Personally, I’d like to see a little bi-partisanship and have a towel donkey in my room tomorrow, but if they can’t make one, I don’t need the real thing.

Days 2 and 3 - St. Thomas and Dominica

Enjoy the pictures from our cruise so far. Day 2, at St. Thomas, we went to Magen's Bay, a beautiful beach on the other side of the island. Day 3, at Dominica, we took Addy on the same rainforest tour Karen and I went on the first time we came here. Trafalgar Falls and the Emerald Pools.

Happy Birthday, Mom!!!! We love you.

Day 1 Puerto Rico

After 18 hours in various airports and in the air, we arrived in San Juan Puerto Rico around 8 am EST, 9 am local time. We took off from Metro around 9:30, 2 hours later than expected. That made us late for our connecting flight in Houston that was supposed to around midnight. There were 20 of us who had to make the flight so they held it and that flight didn't leave until 2 a.m. (I think). By then, it was hard to keep track of time, I wasn't wearing a watch, and it was late.

So, we got here, and the Courtyard Mariott in Miramar let us into our room early, and we crashed for a few hours. Then around 3-4 p.m. we got up and wandered around to Playa del Condado and had dinner at a restaurant with a nice ocean view (as you can see from the pictures). Bring a jacket b/c it can get windy - Addy was a little chilly by the end of dinner. We went Geo-hunting but didn't find it and then walked along the beach and took a taxi back to the hotel.

Thanks again for everyone who has helped us out with Riley and Izzy and getting us to the airport. Merry Xmas. We'll miss you.

Izzy's 1st Snow Day

Izzy had her first real snow day on Friday, December 19th when the first big snowstorm of the season hit Michigan. She had seen and experienced snow earlier in the year, but nothing like this.

Enjoy the pics. She had a blast.

Club Penguin and Christmas

During christmas break my family will be on a cruise. I mailed my letter to Santa yesterday but he'll get it on Wesenday. I told him that he might have to drop my christmas present off early because I leave on the 19th and when he gets my letter he won't have a lot of time to drop it off but I don't want to sound to greedy. I wanted a Ds game for christmas called Club Penguin Elite Penguin Force. I'm dying to get it!! Anyways check out Club Penguin. Merry Christmas!

Halloween Visit to Tillson Street in Romeo, MI

One of the dads on Addy's soccer team suggested that we go check out this crazy street that was all decked out for Halloween. So, we got 7 of the girls to go, loaded them up, met at the Dairy Queen on the corner of Tillson and Main (which is Van Dyke) just south of 32 Mile Rd. and headed on in to the unknown. This is what we saw.

Hope you enjoyed that as much as we did.

Happy Halloween.

Getting ready for soccer

Hi everyone.
We're getting ready for a soccer game this morning against Royal Oak. Hopefully, this will be Addy's team's first win this fall. It's been more of a struggle this fall than last season. Last year's team came together quickly and placed third in the division. But, Addy's team still have six games to go and have been getting better and better every game. They've had 2 ties in their last three games and hung in there in the last game but lost 3-1, all against 3 teams from the top of the division.
Talk to you soon. You can check up on the standings at http://www.michigansoccer.com/ and look up U11 Girls Red (that's Addy's division).
I'm off to take Izzy to the vet and then to the game. Karen and Addy are going to the game. Wish them luck. Hope you all have a beautiful weekend.

5 stories that I made in 4th grade

Hello Everyone!! My dad told me that I should type up my stories that I made in 4th grade. I made 5. My first one is a Fantasy story. It's called Evee and the Purple Dragon.

Evee was doing her Social Studies homework when she stopped to think. Then she noticed the picture of her twin sister, Espeon. Evee and Espeon were unique girls. They both had yellow and green eyes. One day Espeon disappeared. But no one found her. Suddenly Evee heard a sound. Evee rushed outside just in time to see a red dragon flying away. Evee looked around. There was a purple egg resting peacefully in a bucket full of hay only a few inches from her. Evee saw a note on the egg. The note said:

Dear Evee,
Take this rare dragon and treat it with care.

"Hm. This handwriting looks so familiar." thought Evee. Evee continued reading the letter.

Feed it and make sure that nobody sees or knows about your new dragon. I love you! I'm up in the clouds. Love, Espeon

"Espeon!! She's alive!!" exclaimed Evee. Suddenly the egg shoke and out popped an irrestible adorable baby purple dragon. "Oh how cute!" exclaimed Evee.
"Did you say something dear?" asked her mom as her head popped out of her window all of a sudden.
"No Mom," replied Evee who was trying to hide her new purple dragon.
Her mom put her head back inside.
"Phew!" said Evee. "That was close wasn't it?" asked Evee as she turned around to see that her purple dragon wasn't there anymore. "Wait no don't eat that!" yelled Evee as her new purple dragon gulped down the bucket and the hay that it arrived in. "You need a name! I'll call you Spyrot!" exclaimed Evee with a happy expression and a worried expression on her face. "Wait! Where am I going to put you?" wondered Evee as the expression on her face lit up. She looked around her back yard until her eyes came across tree house. "I know my tree house!" exclaimed Evee.
2 months later....

"I'm impressed that you can talk now!" exclaimed Evee happily as she stroked Spyrot.
"So you just noticed? Oh well thanks Evee. Come. We must fly to your sister. We're here." said Spyrot.
"But that was only 10 secononds!" exclaimed Evee.
"It was only above the clouds!" replied Spyrot.
"Oh. Where is............. woah," said Evee.
"Evee! Welcome to Dragon World!" exclaimed Espeon happily. "Come inside!" said Espeon as she lead her sister and her dragon into the castle. Inside the castle it was all diffrent shades of blue and glitter. For the next three months Evee had to learn wizardry and witches magic. Evee had to learn this so she, Espeon, and Spyrot could fight in the war. They were fighting agianst the Razac for freedom. They were also trying to save Cynder (Sin-der) who is Spyrot's cousin. Cynder is ruling the Razac because her master, Webster, knew that the dragons had the Dark Orb. If the Dark Orb is given to Cynder she'd become more powerful than any other dragon! So Webster went to war to steal the Dark Orb from the dragons. Before the war started Evee and Espeon put on some armor. It wasn't heavy. Right before the war started holding their swords in front of them both twins exclaimed,"We will fight to win!" Crash!Bang!Fire!Earth!Electricity!Ice!Dark! Before the war ended Evee had fell in unconscious. When Evee came to Espeon told that she broke her arm. (Evee and Espeon had transported back to earth as soon as the war was over) After Evee's arm had healed both twins spent more time with each other longer then they ever had. Evee and Espeon got new dragons. (I didn't mention them getting new dragons because before they transported back to earth Cynder gave Espeon two eggs as a thank you for saving her and she was sad that Spyrot died.) ( No one knows why or how Spyrot died) Evee took the purple egg, which looked like Spyrot's egg and Espeon took the black egg. Evee named her dragon Spyrot Jr. and Espeon named hers Cynder Jr. because Evee's new purple dragon looked like Spyrot and the same thing with Espeon except that hers looked like Cynder. The good news is that they didn't have to keep their dragons a secret because after the war Dragons started to exist on earth and now helped everyone. (Even Santa!!) and now everyone who was alive wondered what their futures would be like. The End

I hope you like the story! I changed a lot from the original story. See ya until next time!

Izzy at Home

Izzy is home - finally. After a long wait, I went to pick her up Wednesday evening, July 9th, and we spent a few days just hanging out, potty training (her, not me!), chewing on sticks in the back yard (again, her, not me), and just having a grand old time getting up at 5:30 a.m. Riley has been an amazingly gentle big sister - we didn't expect her to be anything less - and this just reinforces our impression of Riley as a candidate for the Greatest Dog in the World. If there isn't an award like this, there should be.
When I initially brought Izzy home Wednesday night, she was petrified. By nature, she seems like a very cautious pup, but with Riley, she'll be able to explore her backyard and the house and our neighborhood and feel much more comfortable.
Izzy is also a very strong and resilient dog. She was trying to drag the mat that the full water bowl was on in the kitchen. Also, tumbles and spills don't phase her. She was leaping all around the backyard on the first day. Faceplants, tumbles, rolling around, getting swatted by or rolled over on by Riley, or falling into the pool - she took it all in stride.

We read Superpuppy by Daniel Pinkwater and The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Slete (which is New York somewhere) who have made a reputation for raising great German Shepherds. These books were pretty helpful in correcting some of the mistakes we made with Riley and her potty training.
And, at the end of all those periods of play, this is where she ends up. All zonked out.

Pink is Izzy Grace!

Well, when we brought Riley over to see the puppies on the 4th of July, we had our heart set on the puppy with the red yarn around her neck. When we got there, that's a whole different story.

Riley was besieged by Yellow and Orange who wanted to feed on her - like their mom. Red showed little to no interest in Riley - even when alone - and wanted to sit on Riley's head when she did show and interest. Pink was the only one who came up to Riley, and was the first one, to come up to her and sniff her as if she was ready to play.

Afterwards, Pink (Izzy) ran up to Karen and Addy with a big smile.
And she gave Addy a little kiss.
P.S. Aunt Sharon called it - the dog would pick us. Kelsey picked me back in 1994, and sure enough, Izzy had found her new home w/ us.
She's home now, and I'll put a new post up this weekend about her progress.

Fixing what he said and updates

Hey People. It's me Addy. Sorry that i haven't wrote in a while. Anyways when my dad was talking about the puppies and he thought that the picture that was next to the text was of me having yellow on my tummy. That's actually purple on my tummy. Oh yeah and that I'm finished writing a song I might have it recorded on to a CD and then we'll show it to some company to see if they like it. Isn't that cool?? I know! See yah until next time!

Izzy Grace - Which One Is She?

We have been looking at Dawn G.'s 8 puppies born from her Golden Retriever, Callie. Two years ago, we got Riley, one of Callie's first litter. You saw pictures of her in an earlier post. One of these adorable puppies will be our Izzy Grace. Which one? We're not sure yet. Dawn has loosely tied different color yarn around their necks in order to help identify them. The girls are pink, red, yellow and orange. So far, Karen and I like Red - she's inquisitive and a natural poseur. Pink is very laid back but was startled by a loud noise. Addy has fallen in love with Yellow and one of the boys, Purple. All the pics you're seeing here are of the pups at about 3 1/2 weeks.
Here's Purple laying on Addy's tummy. In the previous photo, I think she's playing w/ Yellow.
Here are a couple pictures of Red - one in pose mode and one in exhaustion mode. Notice that she's sleeping anywhere she can.
We're not sure which one will be best for us - will Red be too inquisitive? Is Pink laid back but not too skittish for our family? What about Yellow? Purple? A boy dog?
We'll bring Riley to see the pups when we get home from New York on the 4th of July weekend, and we'll see which one she bonds with. I guess she'll really decide which one is Izzy Grace.

We're at Niagara Falls!

Initially, I said we were "in" Niagara Falls but that would be in incorrect. We actually hadn't ridden over the falls in a barrel like an old school teacher in the 1800s, nor had we survived like an eight year old who went over the falls in 1960 wearing only his life-preserver and his bathing suit.

We rode on a famous boat ride called The Maid of the Mist, and I expected a huge long line and a long wait, but it wasn't too bad. They provided the rain coats - very thin - but they're only used to keep you dry, not warm. And then the boat took us by the rocky falls first and then the big falls. We got less than a hundred yards away from the falls and we got soaked - both upper and lower decks. All of these pictures were taken by Addy's mom, my wife, Karen, except for the one in which Karen and Addy are visible. I didn't manage to screw that one up.

This picture of the falls that Karen took is about as close as we got. I estimated 100 yards, but it was hard to see in the mist. Plus my glasses kept getting wet too, so I had to take those off and trying to look again.

It was a beautiful day and we all had fun, even on the uneventful jaunt down a steep, unmarked dirt path when we took a wrong turn getting to the parking lot.

Summer has begun!

Finally, the girls are out of school, and our summer can finally begin. Between camping trips to New York and other soon-to-be-named places, we'll be attending soccer camp, going to teacher workshops (U.P. and Minneapolis), we're going to have the basement redone due to the recent power outage (I refuse to call it a blackout b/c there's only 1 blackout, and that was the one in August 2003 that blacked out the whole Northeast). Our backup system failed and so now while Addy and Karen are gone at their respective camps, I'm going to be boxing up books abd throwing even more stuff away.
And, one of the best things that happens in the next few weeks is that we'll be picking out our next new puppy - Izzy Grace. But that deserves its own new entry with pictures and writing too.

Pictures of Riley

Here are some pics of Riley when she was a pup.
